We caught up with Rhianna Cooper
, the dreamy designer and creator of one of our favorite jewelry labels, VidaKush
. Read below to find out how she got her start, what VidaKush means, and where she draws inspiration from.
When did you start making jewelry and how did it develop into VidaKush?
I started making jewelry when I was 9, my mom has a jewelry company and she taught me as she learned. It turned into VidaKush in 2011, I had just graduated college and my mom had given me a bunch of her old supplies. I started making a bunch of stuff and an artist friend asked if I wanted to sell with her at Venice Beach Boardwalk one day. I brought what I had made and my supplies, we had a blast selling jewelry and making custom stuff for people, it was a great feeling and I decided that was what I wanted to do.
What kind of girls can we find rocking your brand?
You can find every different type of girl rocking VidaKush, we aim to have something for everyone no matter what your style is. Our motto is no rules when it comes to fashion, the brand doesn't operate off of exclusivity. We want the brand to be relatable to anyone, and to make any girl feel beautiful.
Where do you draw inspiration from when making a new design?
I draw inspiration from my heritage, I am half Indian and half American, the combination of my parents cultures and the mesh of traditions I experienced growing up influence my love of different colors and accessorizing every part of the body. Born and raised in Los Angeles, the sharp contrast from different parts of the city and the diversity I see around me influence me to not be afraid to mix different styles and materials.
How did you come up with the name VidaKush?
Vida means life in spanish, Kush is in reference to the Ancient Egyptians "golden era" called the Kush Kingdom, VidaKush means "live gold"
Who are your 3 top Girl Crushes?
These three girls have been amazing friends, sisters, and muses for the company.
What's next for you?
I love what I do, I get to be creative everyday, I work with my mom and my best friends, I hope to continue to grow the brand and to be able to travel more, maybe this year we will go back to Japan, or get to go to Dubai or Australia.
