Alert: We have a major girl crush on Zoe Silverman, the bold lead singer of NYC pop duo ASTR. Zoe slayed Governors Ball 2015 with her explosive live performance and enviable personal style. Now the countdown begins to ASTR’s new Homecoming EP. We spent some much needed girl time at Randall’s Island with Zoe to talk belly chains, chokers and girl power.
Who are three of your girl crushes: Cailin Russo, Vashti Kola, Lily Rose Depp.
How would you describe your killer personal style in one word? Tomboy. I want my hair and nails to be put together so I can wear whatever I want and be comfortable all the time. I just want to wear baggy pants and sports bras.
How do you celebrate girl power in your everyday life? Every time I perform it’s girl power. Most of what we write is girl power too. I’ve had some moments that were questionable with men in the music business and I’ve been pretty vocal about it. I like to stick up for women. It’s about making everyone feel like they can break the mold that society creates for them. It’s changing though.
“Activate Me” is our new summer jam. What is your summer 2015 anthem? Jamie XX featuring Young Thugg: “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)”
What ‘90s and early 2000’s trends are you all about bringing back? I’m really into belly chains. I’m also a choker necklace freak. I’m obsessed with tassels and heart chokers. Also suede hats. I want a suede hat in every color. I really like the tube tops with matching bottoms like Destiny’s Child used to wear. Monochrome outfits too denim on denim on denim is working now.
What can we be excited about next from ASTR? I’m really proud of the body of work we’re about to put out. It’s not a full album so I think people don’t give you as much credibility or your label doesn’t want to put too much money into an EP but I’m so proud of Homecoming. It’s the darkwave we’re trying to establish that teeters into house and teeters into R&B but it’s really about fun, edgy electronic music.
