How long have you been playing music and how did it all start?
I've been playing music basically my entire life. I started piano at five, guitar at thirteen, started my first band (The Like) at fifteen. I've been singing since I could talk. The members of my current band, Phases, and I have known each other for more than half of my life. I'm very lucky to play music with my best friends.
Words to live by?
CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN'T LOSE.
Describe your style in 5 words or less.
Composed yet defiant costumes.
What's on your current playlist?
The new Chairlift record! Tame Impala, Borns, Scott Walker, Nico, Robert Wyatt, Collapsing Scenery, Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, Grimes, Cat's Eyes, Francoise Hardy.
Who are your icons?
Nabokov, Keith Richards, Yves Klein, Debbie Harry, Snoop Dog, Dostoyevsky, Langley Fox, Diana Ross, Martin Amis.
Any advice for aspiring musicians or artists?
Prepare yourself for rocky terrain. You must be adventurous, fully dedicated, and wholly crazy. And if you are, never give up; the life of an artist is one worth living.
What's next for you?
Phases will be performing at South by Southwest and then Coachella!! Hope to see you there.
