SXSW is just around the corner! If you are a first timer to the festival and have no idea where to start, we have your back! Here are a few tips and tricks to surviving your first SXSW experience and making the best of it.
Tip #1: CREATE A SCHEDULE
For all of you gals who love planning, this is a dream adventure to organize. If you’re the type of gal that prefers to go with the flow team up with your gal with a plan that way you’ll be able to roam freely with no worries ;) First look at the times of all of the activities you want to do (film, music, performances, there’s so much to see!) and make a schedule. But always remember festival rule number one, you’re not going to make it to everything you want to do, so learn to go with the flow and not get attached to your schedule.
P.S SXSW now has a mobile app where you can create your schedule and check out new artists. Download it here.
Tip #2 DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!
Remember, this festival takes place in Texas, so it is more than likely you will be experiencing a multitude of climates. Hot and muggy weather will probably be the weather you will experience, so stay hydrated!! It is also very likely that you will be consuming large amounts of alcohol, so this is yet another reason to stay hydrated!! It would be a huge bummer to you and your friends if you were to get sick for not taking care of yourself, so keep water with you at all times possible. As we all know, drinking plenty of water also helps you avoid a gnarly hangover, so enjoy your days at SXSW hangover free by staying on top of your H2O intake.
Tip #3 TRAVEL SECURITY
If you are traveling, make sure you have a secure place to stay. As simple as it sounds, imagine how terrible it would be to not have anywhere to stay during your time at SXSW. Whether it be you crashing at your friend's place or staying at a hotel nearby, just simply make sure the place is secured. Even if your day completely crashes into flames, you will at least have a comfy and cozy bed to come back to at the end of the night.
Another factor that goes into staying alive is eating, and Austin has some bomb street food! Before you get there, look up some places you would like to try during your time there, there's some spots we're dying to check out!
Tip #4 What to wear!
Remember this word when packing your clothing, comfort. I know us gals sometimes choose cute looks over comfort, but you’ll be thanking me after a long sweaty day of standing. Although, you can always look both comfy and cute, it’s not about what you wear but how you wear it. Try to aim for something airy for your looks. The Mon Cheri Wrap Dress or Crema Overall Dress would be ideal. Match it with your favorite pair of sneakers and you are good to go! The dress requires little to no additional styling since it is so cute within itself so it makes for a simple sweet look. If dresses aren’t your thing, then go for a tee and jean combo. If you think this combo is a bit too simple, then add a cute statement tee like the Here Comes Trouble Tee. Add a belt and some comfy boots for a completed SXSW look. Towards the end of the night it is likely that you will experience a shift in the weather. So make sure to carry around a jacket with you. The Bitchin’ Satin Bomber Jacket will keep you real bitchin’ and warm.
Tip #5 BACKPACK WITH ESSENTIALS
Since you probably will not get the chance to return to your hotel room throughout the day, you will want to carry around a bag of essentials. We all have different definitions of what exactly our “essentials” are. So aside from your personal go tos, here are a few things we recommend to take in your backpack (our cactus backpack is perfect for the desert, just sayin ;).)
1.One of the most important things in our life, our cell phones. Most of us freak out when our phone dies, so if that sounds like you, make sure you have your charger! This is probably something redundant to say because of course you’ll pack your charger but hey, maybe you’re reading this as your packing and you forgot to pack it and this reminded you to pack it.
2.Your must have items to freshen up! Dry shampoo, hand sanitizer, deodorant, chap stick, a brush, etc!
Being stuck in the sun for a while might also cause headaches, or really any random pains can randomly come to you, so it is appropriate to carry around some ibuprofen for those random body pest.
