Girl Crush: Pearl Charles

Rock n' roll's latest muse, Pearl Charles, stopped by the studio to catch up about her creative process, must have items on tour, style, favorite spots to hang out in LA, and more. We adore her americana free spirited style and dreamy voice so be sure to check out her music and follow her adventures on instagram

How did you get into music?
Both my parents are artists so they encouraged my siblings and I to experiment in all the arts, but from a young age I was always drawn to songwriting, singing and playing instruments.
Describe your style in 5 words or less.
Fringe, Velvet, Leather, Suede, Denim
Any must have items on tour?
I have this one pair of vintage Frye boots that go with literally everything! I always bring them with me because I can style all my outfits around them and not have to bring any extra pairs of shoes.
Where do you draw inspiration from? Is there song writing process that you have?
I find I gain a lot of inspiration from Los Angeles itself and the musicians and artists that have been influenced by the California landscape, from the city to the desert to the beach. My songwriting process varies from song to song and has definitely changed as I've gotten older. I used to just wait for inspiration to strike, and still oftentimes I find those moments to be the most fruitful, but these days I try to dedicate more time to writing so that while I am attempting to channel some of the abstract ideas I have into my songs, I am also opening myself up for the muse to grace me with a visit, rather than just passively waiting for it to happen.
Who are your top 3 Girl Crushes?
Though there is definitely some crossover, it's hard to choose between the classic Trio of Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton and the Ladies of the Canyon like Joni Mitchell, Michelle Phillips and Carole King.
What's on your current playlist?
Seabird by Alessi Brothers, Lonesome LA Cowboy by New Riders of the Purple Sage and Drive by The Cars
What's next for you?
I am dropping two new releases for this year's Record Store Day on April 16th! One is the extended version of my Burger Records EP which Kanine Records is putting out on vinyl, it will have two live tracks and one unreleased studio track (you can check out the video for that song called "Mind's A Mystery", as well as another brand new song called "Phases" premiering on the Sensible Labels Volume 2 vinyl compilation, which will also have a video to go with it, so keep your eyes peeled!
