At Valfré our obsession with mermaids is no joke, so when we first laid ears on The Aquadolls
we instantly fell in love. Front woman, Melissa Brooks
, stopped by the studio to shoot some of our Mermaid Inspired pieces, and catch up. Read on to find out the craziest thing she's done on stage, what music influenced her growing up, and what's next for her.
How did you come up with the name Aquadolls?
The name comes from my love of mermaids and the ocean. A sparkling, glitter mermaid sitting on the shore strumming her guitar with seashells in her hair.
How would you describe your music in 5 words or less?
Wild, empowering, romantic, and chill.
What's the craziest thing you've ever done on stage? Off stage?
On stage, I tend to stage dive a lot in the middle of shows while singing. It feels so freeing to be held up by people who are screaming the lyrics along with me. It makes me feel welcome, yet wild at the same time since I'm usually covered in sweat and glitter. Off stage, hmm. I like to dance for several hours in my bedroom to the Spice Girls.
Where's your favorite place to hang out around California?
I love hanging out at the beach! One of the most beautiful places I like to hang out at is a small strip of beach in Seal Beach called Rivers End. I always find the prettiest sea shells there when the tide is low, and I like to walk around it and relax. I find a lot of inspiration from that spot.
What music inspired you growing up? What music inspires you today?
Growing up, I was raised on The Beach Boys, Connie Francis, The Ronettes, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix. I also developed childhood obsessions with No Doubt, Hole, and Britney Spears. I spent a lot of my youth singing into my hair brush to their songs, pretending that someday that hair brush would be a real microphone. Now, I am inspired by elements of what I grew up on mixed with modern artists like Grimes, Lana Del Rey, and Charli XCX.
What's on your current playlist?
Marina and The Diamonds second and third album, HANA's new EP, Halsey, The 1975, SWMRS, ZAYN's album Mind Of Mine, the list could go on and on! I am lately really obsessed with 90s EDM music. The entire Aqua album Aquarium is super catchy and makes me feel really happy. I also love Vengaboys. In a nutshell, I love music that makes me happy.
What’s next for you?
I'll be releasing a new single really soon, and will be shooting a music video as well! Also, we’ll be announcing some really exciting tour stuff soon! xx
