How did you first start making music?
I started when I was really young- my mom was a songwriter when she was younger. She never did it professionally, but I kind of grew up doing it. She gave me her old guitar when I was 7 and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since.
You recently welcomed a rescued dog into your home, what has that been like?
She’s been great! She was just on the side of the road a few years back. I drove with her to LA from Nashville when I moved here. She’s my pal. I have a painting of her face that hangs over my bed. I work with some rescues in Brazil also. I really have a passion for rescue dogs.

Who are your favorite fashion icons?
I love Gwen Stefani. I feel like she doesn’t care but always looks so chaotically; especially in the no doubt days. I really like Hayley from Paramore. I love Debbie Harry from the original Blondie era. They’re role models of mine and I love that they use fashion as statements and self-expression.

Tell us about your tattoos. When did you get them and what do they mean?
I have a several little ones but they’re growing! I have a strawberry which is a matching tattoo with a best friend of mine. Then I have “be good” on my arm, a queen of hearts on my wrist (for a previous EP I released) and one of my favorite quotes “live the life you’ve always imagined” by Thoreau. Some of to remind me of my dreams and sometimes I get some because I think they’re cute.

What element of your work gives you the most personal satisfaction?
Releasing music is a really good feeling and I also love playing live. I think playing live shows in the most rewarding feeling. Or when you write a rad new song and get to listen to it in the car with the windows down.

What factors do you think make a good song?
Real emotion is a big factor, I’m constantly trying to incorporate that and be more raw. A catchy melody also has a lot to do with it. I’m learning that repetition is a really good thing because our brains latch on to it.

Who are you currently listening to?
I love Jon Bellion, The Band Camino, Tove Stryke. I love the new Maggie rogers album cause its very raw and has a lot of live instrumentation which I’ve been craving lately. I really like the new Solange record also.
What’s a part of your creative process?
Spending time alone and getting in touch with myself is something I’ve found to be extremely important. If I don’t get any time alone to sort through my emotions, I can’t even really tell what I’m feeling. I’ve found being alone has become instrumental to my writing process in a lot of ways. I like to write my feelings down and then I take those into a room with me when i'm making music.
We saw on Instagram you have a new song coming out, can you give our readers a hint of what to expect?
Yes! I’m so excited about it. It’s called “I Do”. It’s a little softer and more nostalgic then my last couple of songs. I went through a really bad breakup when I first moved to LA last year. The song is about knowing a relationship is over and not wanting to admit to yourself that you’re still in love with that person. It comes out at the end of this month :)
