We caught up with Singer, Dani Poppitt, and guitarist/producer, Marshall Gallagher, who make up our new favorite grungy pop band, Shallows. Read on to find out the inspiration behind their new single Matter, how they came up with the band name Shallows, and what they're looking forward to this year.
Describe your music in 3 words.
Contemporary Smooth Jazz. But if you ask anyone else, it is an attempt to erase the line between alternative and pop, underground and mainstream, grunge and glitter. More than three, but worth it.
How did you come up with the band name Shallows?
We were originally called YOU DIE and it didn't test well. We reluctantly pooled together about 20 other names and Shallows was the best one.
What was the inspiration behind the new single Matter?
We like to play with words, if we can get away with it. "Tell me I'm not just Matter, tell me that I Matter" was the first thing that came out, and from there we spiraled into an existential crisis.
Did you both always know you wanted to play music? How did Shallows come about?
I wanted to make pizza when I was 5, and then I wanted to be a paleontologist. I wasn't great at either of those things and somehow I got pretty good at guitar, so that came out on top. Shallows came about after meeting Dani at a party. One of the only random jam sessions I've had in LA that yielded good results, and then some.
Who are both of your musical influences?
Kanye West, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Washed Out, 3OH!3
What are you looking forward to this year?
Releasing our new EP!
Anything else you guys would like to share?
We have so much new music to share with everyone, including another brand new single later this month.
